Search “ceramic coating” around Katy and you get shops, mobile operators, detailers who added coating last month, and franchises. Quotes for the same car can span $300 to $2,000. The spread is not random; it maps to real differences you can surface with seven questions before anyone touches your paint.
Anyone can buy a consumer coating kit online and call it professional. The manufacturers behind real multi-year systems (System X, Ceramic Pro, Gtechniq and similar) vet installers before letting them apply the professional lines, because a bad install becomes their warranty problem. Ask which brand, then ask to be shown the accreditation. We publish ours: System X Accredited Installer.
This is the sharpest question on the list. A verbal “it’ll last five years” is worth nothing in year three. A registered manufacturer warranty exists in the manufacturer’s system with your VIN on it. If the answer to “who backs it” is the installer alone, the coating is only as durable as their business.
Prep is most of a coating install, and it is where cheap quotes save their money. A real install includes a decontamination wash, mechanical or chemical decon (clay or iron remover), and a panel-by-panel IPA wipe-down so the coating bonds to paint rather than to wax and road film. Higher tiers add machine paint correction first. If a quote cannot itemize prep, the prep is the corner being cut.
A coating locks in whatever is under it, swirls included. On a newer car a light polish may be enough; on a daily driver with two Texas summers on it, a 1-step correction makes the difference between “shiny” and “deep.” Ask whether correction is included, what level, and what it costs to add.
Almost nobody coating cars in the Katy area publishes prices. We do, and any installer confident in their value can. Published pricing does two things: it proves the number was not invented after seeing your zip code, and it lets you compare like for like. Ours start at $449 for a 1-year professional system on a sedan.
A shop install means two trips across Houston traffic and a day without your car. A mobile install happens in your driveway or garage, and you can watch every stage, including the prep from question 3. Mobile is not a compromise if the operator is self-contained (own water, own power, own lighting); it is the same chemistry applied where you can supervise it.
Real work photos and verifiable Google reviews beat a franchise brochure. Look for reviews that mention your area, recent dates, and owner replies. Two minutes on an installer’s Google profile tells you more than their homepage.
Every question above surfaces the same split: product plus prep plus accountability versus a bottle and a promise. The cheap quote is usually the same bottle with the prep and the warranty removed. Ask the seven, and the market sorts itself in an afternoon.
